 Revised 19/06/2008
| Report on the College of Radiology Value Added Mammogram Programme 2007 – 14 June 2008 Report compiled by Dr Evelyn Ho, IIUM Breast Centre and Breast Cancer Support Society, Segamat | 2007 CoR Mammogram Programme Continues In Quiet Efficiency... The 2007 College of Radiology value added Mammogram Programme (CMP2007) was run for the smaller town yet again. The College of Radiology (CoR) accredited mammogram provider was again IIUM Breast Centre, Kulliyyah of Medicine, Kuantan, Pahang. The CMP 2007 was held from 16 July 2007 to 10 December 2007. The total number of women who had mammography in this programme was 299. The primary area served was in and around Segamat to provide continuity of the programme started in 2006.
There were 180 Chinese women, 81 Malays, 35 Indian, 1 Sikh and only 2 in the "Others" category. They were from Johor, Pahang and Melaka although the vetting centre was primarily Segamat’s Breast Cancer Support Society. The women were aged between 40 and 76 years. Most of them (262 women) never had a mammogram before. Among the 299 patients, 22 had a family history of breast cancer. 150 women had breast ultrasound as a complementary examination.
167 women had normal mammograms (category 1), 90 were in category 2 (benign), 31 in category 3 (probably benign or indeterminate requiring close follow up or biopsy), 8 in category 4 (slightly suspicious) and 3 in category 5(highly suspicious). Five women had image-guided biopsies and a further 9 had fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) done. The number of proven cancers that were subsequently treated was four, two with spread to the armpit lymph nodes.
The wet season at the end of the year posed problems with transport from Segamat. On the whole the Programme was very well handled and coordinated by the Breast Cancer Support Society, Segamat where the majority of the participants were from (vetted, and arrangements made for them to travel to and fro to Kuantan). The women paid a small fee of RM30 for the value added mammogram only, and those who were very poor, were given the programme for free. The cost of the biopsies and aspiration; and transportation to and fro between Segamat and Kuantan was borne by the College of Radiology Value Added Mammogram Programme.
The College of Radiology wishes to thank all donors to the mammogram and breast health programmes and activities. These include Estee Lauder Group of Companies, Wear IT Pink 2 Breast Cancer Education and Awareness Campaign, Johnson & Johnson, as well as caring individuals.
In the 2007 Estee Lauder breast cancer awareness campaign, RM 100,000 was donated to the CoR. This money was received in January 2008 for our programmes. | | | | More detailed reports of the various breast cancer awareness and mammogram programmes: | Subsidised Mammogram Programme 2006 Report – read it here! “Please don’t stop the subsidised mammogram programme!”

“The CoR Subsidised Mammogram Programme has been much anticipated in Johor as previously many of our ladies had to go to Singapore or other states in Malaysia for their mammograms. There are many who were unable to access the CMP in 2005 and we hope that the College of Radiology will run the programme in 2006 in Johor so that the others can access it at a subsidised rate. There are also those from 2005 who had abnormal mammograms who need a follow up in 2006. We will help to raise funds to provide the subsidy if funds are inadequate.” Ms Doris Wee, President of the Breast Cancer Support Group, Johor Bahru and also co-ordinator for the CMP2005/2006 in Johor.
| | Thank you, CoR MP!
| | “On 25th August 2004, I had my first mammogram and it showed I had breast cancer. I had not felt anything in my breasts at all! I would not have thought about a mammogram if not for the College of Radiology’s breast cancer awareness programmes and specifically the provision of mammograms at subsidised rates. Fortunately my friend had heard about it and told me to go for one. I feel this is a good programme for creating awareness and also helping women to access mammograms by providing a subsidy. This programme should be ongoing!” - Mdm SL Ang, 57 years old and a retired civil servant.
