Estée Lauder Companies Lights up Pavilion Kuala Lumpur in Pink 1 October 2007
By Dr Evelyn Ho

What an exciting start to Pink October, the International Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Estée Lauder Companies in partnership with Kuala Lumpur Pavilion Sdn Bhd illuminated the grand entrance facade of Pavilion KL in bright pink lights. In “relief” against the bright pink was a ribbon with the words: “Help Us Win – Wear A Pink Ribbon”. Pavilion KL was the latest landmark in Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle.

This unique illumination initiative was a first in Malaysia and is part of ELC’s Global Landmarks Illumination Initiative, the brainchild of Evelyn Lauder. The mission was to focus attention, spread awareness about breast cancer and the message that early detection saves lives. This Initiative is now into its 8th year and ELC has illuminated hundreds of famous buildings, monuments and landmarks in glowing pink light in over 50 countries around the world. These illuminated buildings become international symbols of hope and continue to enlighten women everywhere.

The ELC Illumination Campaign 2007 was officiated by the Honourable Dato’ Dr Ng Yen Yen, Deputy Finance Minister 1. Mr Fabrice Weber, President of ELC Asia Pacific; Mr Loo Kai Nan, Managing Director of ELC Malaysia, Mr John Sironic, Director of Centre Management, Pavilion KL each gave short speeches for this 1st Landmark Illumination Project by ELC. Dato’ Dr Ng Yen Yen, a familiar figure in events in support of breast cancer awareness, gave a very spirited and heartfelt message to the guests and media at this event. She spoke on the statistics of breast cancer in Malaysia and how early detection could make a difference in people’s lives. She encouraged women of the right age group to go for their mammograms and also gave an idea to the men folk to perhaps give incentives to their loved ones (spouses) to get their breasts checked!

After the formalities, everyone followed the VIPs to the entrance of Pavilion KL where the trigger for the flood of pink lights was going to take place. Reminiscent of a crystal ball yet with a revolving ELC campaign logo of the pink ribbon within – Dato’ Dr Ng, Fabrice Weber, Loo Kai Nan and John Sironic touched their palms simultaneously on this ball for the illumination. Shocking pink lit up the front facade and within less than a minute, fireworks added to the fanfare! It was indeed a joyful sight to behold.

With this, the Illumination ceremony came to a close with refreshments for the guests, providing an opportunity for rejuvenating contacts, making new friends and simply just absorbing the atmosphere.

Congratulations to
Estée Lauder Companies, Malaysia for such an initiative and for the grand start to Pink October 2007 in Malaysia. Their other programmes in Pink October will as usual include road shows in shopping malls, a charity gala dinner and sponsorship of mammograms.
