A Day with the Radiologists for a feel of rearch and academia.

“Good morning everyone. I’m a Forensic Radiologist; I scan dead bodies”. Those were the words of Associate Professor Dr. Saiful Nizam Abdul Rashid during his opening speech at the continuous medical education (CME) talk for the Radiology Open Day, in conjunction with Faculty Excellence Month (FEM) 2015 at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FHMS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

Associate Prof. Dr. Saiful Nizam showcased his research on Post Mortem Computed Tomography Angiography (PMCTA) for vascular injury related deaths in the field of Forensic Radiologist. He also invited a panel of speakers comprising his research collaborators from Hospital Kuala Lumpur, which included Dr. Siew Shue Feng, Senior Forensic Pathologist from Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) and three forensic pathology medical officers also from HKL; namely Dr. Nurhidayah Mohd Yatim, Dr. Muhammad Yazid Sahak and Dr. Atif Shamsudin.

The Radiology Open Day 2015 was an immensely successful event with overwhelming response from faculty members, undergraduate and postgraduate students; doctor from both Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Hospital Serdang and radiology equipment vendors. It was one among many pre-summit events held during the Faculty Excellence Month 2015 in UPM.

The pre-summit CME/ Forum was followed by a few parallel sessions namely: ultrasound abdomen/ pelvis screening by radiologists from the Imaging Department in collaboration with the Centre for Nuclear Diagnostic Imaging, UPM; radiology quiz for UPM final year Medical Students and radiology equipment booths as well as medical posters exhibition.

The event aimed at bringing awareness of medical diagnostic screening tests that are available for the faculty members specifically and the public in general. It also helped to inculcate a culture for research and publication among the students. In addition, it gave the students an exposure of a prospect for further studies as well as to spark interest to pursue a career in radiology. The head of Imaging Department FMHS, UPM Dr. Suraini Mohammad Saini stated her hope that this event should become an annual highlight for the Faculty Excellence Month and can serve as a platform for propagation of research in the field of diagnostic imaging.

The Faculty Excellence Month is an annual event at FHMS that aims to highlight the achievements of the university in general and the faculty specifically in the fields of academia, research, as well as community and industry linkages. The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Prof Dato’ Dr. Abdul Jalil Nordin, stated that the objective of the Faculty Excellence Month was to create research awareness among the members by providing a platform to consolidate ideas and to enlighten new findings with ‘cross-road’ possibilities in solving medical science ‘mysteries’, and answering the inquisitive minds of researchers from multi-disciplinary groups. He also expressed that multidisciplinarity has always been the core value in medical research, and events such as this are necessary to cultivate a research culture among academicians.
