The College of Radiology has great pleasure in welcoming to its fold, 33 newly inducted members, representing a mix of oncologists, radiologists and a nuclear medicine physician. Nine of its members were also conferred their Fellowship in the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia’s Conferment of Fellows and Induction of Academicians Ceremony on 8 Aug 2010.

Permanent Asian Oceanian Society of Radiology Secretariat Established in Seoul 21 April 2010 By Prof Dr Byung-Ihn Choi & Dr Evelyn Ho
It was a historic milestone for the Asian Oceanian Society of Radiology (AOSR) when the permanent secretariat was made official during the opening ceremony at the Korean Society of Radiology (KSR) office in Seoul on 21 April 2010.

What a turnout at the 2010 College of Radiology Annual Scientific and Annual General Meeting- The Heart & Lungs: From Basics to Intervention, Kuala Lumpur 9-11 April 2010 By Dr Evelyn Ho
The College of Radiology, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia recorded an unprecedented turnout at our recent annual scientific meeting held in the Legend Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. There were 280 delegates at the 2 day scientific meeting and 175 delegates at the precongress workshop “A Holistic Approach to Mammography”. The Heart & Lungs represented the pulse of medicine with a multidisciplinary approach.

iPhone/iPod Touch Program “Radiation Passport” Estimates Radiation/Cancer Risks from Radiology and Related Examinations and Procedures 2009 by Dr Mark Otto Baerlocher
Radiation Passport - for the iPhone and iPod Touch allows physicians and other healthcare professionals to enter the age and gender of their patient, and the specific examination (modality and body part), and receive an estimate of the average associated radiation dose, and associated risk of developing cancer (total, and fatal cancers separately). The overall goal of Radiation Passport is to increase awareness and education among patients about the potential risks of medical radiation.

“iCheck iAct iLive” submission wins top prize for the Radiology Malaysia-OutRageously PiNk Nite 2009 Slogan Contest, Bangsar Village II, Kuala Lumpur 7 Nov 2009 By Dr Evelyn Ho
The top winning slogan was adopted as the theme for the OutRageously PiNk Nite (OPN) and it was “iCheck iAct iLive” submitted by homemaker Madam Loh Cheng Kee from Penang. Mdm Loh, made the trip to Kuala Lumpur with her sister and joined in the festive–like OPN2009!

The Breast Week in Kuantan 31 Oct-6 Nov 2009 By Prof Dato' Dr Humairah Samad-Cheung
Three breast meetings were held in Kuantan from 31 October to 6 November 2009. These were the Asian Breast Diseases Association (ABDA) 7th Teaching Course 2009; Pre-Course Breast Imaging Workshop and the Tabar Course. These were very well attended and the Tabar course had participants from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Japan, South Africa, India, and United Arab Emirates. The 7th ABDA Teaching Course attracted a total of 181 participants. The meeting was multi-disciplinary with the theme “Screening, Staging and Optimal Management of Breast Cancer”.

Sarawak General Hospital is now one of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) Designated Centers of Integrated Oncology and Palliative Care, Berlin 22 Sep 2009 By Dr Beena Devi
The Department of Radiotherapy, Oncology and Palliative Care Unit, Sarawak General Hospital was recently awarded the ESMO Designated Centres of Integrated Oncology and Palliative Care after satisfactorily fulfilling the required 13 criteria. The prestigious “ESMO Designated Centres of Integrated Oncology and Palliative Care” program is an incentive program initiated in 2003 in which cancer centres can receive special recognition for achieving a high standard of integration of medical oncology and palliative care. The ESMO designation is valid for 3 years.

“Safety is OUR BUSINESS”, says Director General of Health at the MOH-AMM Scientific Meeting 17-18 Aug 2009 By Dr Evelyn Ho
Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Hj Mohd Ismail Merican delivered the key note address at the opening ceremony of the 8th Ministry of Health Malaysia–Academy of Medicine of Malaysia Scientific Meeting 2009 incorporating the 12th Scientific Meeting of the National Institutes of Health. His message was safety should be everyone’s business, as patient safety was imperative in the provision of quality care. The title of his keynote address was the theme of the meeting “Building a Safety Culture through Accountability”. New members of the College of Radiology were inducted at this opening ceremony.

Forum on Implications of the AFTA & ASEAN Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) for Medical Practitioners, Academies Building, Kuala Lumpur 16 Aug 2009 By Dr Evelyn Ho
The ASEAN MRA for medical practitioners, signed in August 2008 will be effective 1st January 2010. To create awareness and allow a platform for clarifications and queries, the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia and the MMA organised a forum for the 16 Aug 2009 morning.

Colleges of Radiology Meet at the 43rd Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine 6-8 Aug 2009 By Dr Evelyn Ho
The 43rd Singapore-Malaysia Congress of Medicine was held at the Waterfront Grand Copthorne Hotel in Singapore. It was remarkable that at this meeting, the organisers/scientific chairs included Presidents of the American College of Radiology (Carol Rumack), Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Radiologists (Mark Khangure) , Royal College of Radiologists UK (Andy Adam), Hong Kong College of Radiologists (Chun-Key Law), Singapore College of Radiologists (Bien-Soo Tan) and Malaysian College of Radiology (Evelyn Ho).
