National Ethics Seminar: The Ethical and
Professional Doctor - The Role of Medical Education, Kuala Lumpur
6 Dec 2008 By Dr Evelyn Ho
The Academy of Medicine and Ministry of Health organised an afternoon
series of lectures with a panel discussion on the important issue of the
role of medical education in inculcating and grooming a doctor who is
ethical and professional. At a time where commercialisation of medicine
was inevitable, it was even more important to ensure doctors maintain
their professionalism and were able to practise ethically and self
regulate. The best place to start would then be in the medical school
where foundations for a medical career are built.
Topics included “Can Medical Students Appreciate Ethics?”, “Are Ethical
Issues Escalating? – The Malaysian Medical Council’s Perspective”,
“Ethics as Part of Continuing Professional Development” and “The Public
Perception of a Doctor”. The speakers were Prof Dr Christina Tan, Dato’
Dr Abdul Hamid Abdul Kadir, Dr Maimunah Abdul Hamid and Ms Ranjit Kaur
respectively. Ranjit Kaur is President of the Breast Cancer Welfare
Association in Malaysia and is a breast cancer survivor herself. She was
thus in the best position to give this lecture, based on her experience
as well as research into this area. She also sits on the Board of
Directors of the International Union Against Cancer. The Panel
Discussion was chaired by Dr Victor Lim, Dean of International Medical
University.
