In view of the interest in “energy” and healing to complement chronic illness including cancers, it is timely to present this article from an e-interview between Dr Evelyn Ho and Mr Peter Choy who was Director of The Holistic Health Centre in Stratford-upon-Avon for three years. Peter has worked with more than 180 different therapists involved in Complementary and Alternative Health.

The Background on Peter Chin

Dr Evelyn Ho: How long did it take for you to discover your calling and become a Tai Chi Chi Kung teacher?

Peter: I must thank my father for this calling actually. My father was a Chinese doctor and a Martial Arts Master besides working for the Malaysian government as Assistant Superintendant of Customs & Excise. Although he was stubbornly a believer in me becoming a doctor or lawyer or accountant, he also saw the value of my interest in Tai Chi Chi Kung. So, at a young age, seeing my father helping the poor and the rich with Chinese medicine left its mark on me. Ever since I was able to read, I remember going into my father's private library and reading his books on Chinese and Yoga healing arts. I did try Enid Blyton's books but books on Tai Chi Chi Kung philosophy really held my attention.

In primary school, friends gave me the nickname, 'Old Man' because I was always pondering on questions about life instead of playing rubber seeds, rubber bands and marbles with them!! As a teenager, I started learning at Master Huang Sheng-Shyan's Tai Chi School from 1970-1972. The School was just walking distance from my parents' place!!

My father knew of Master Huang's wisdom and highly recommended him to me. Now, my father used to bring home many Siamese monks, Tai Chi Masters and wise old friends to the house and he often asked me (of all 7 brothers and sisters, I was the only one serious about Tai Chi Chi Kung) to come out and demonstrate to his visitors. They would discuss amongst themselves that what I had demonstrated was more than Tai Chi, they felt this tremendous energy in the room and felt in a state of awe!'

I have felt lots of spine tingling and energy flow through my whole body, even before I started learning the physical side of Tai Chi Chi Kung.

When I left school and started doing jobs, my bosses would ask me to teach them Tai Chi Chi Kung and ask me for help in their personal problems even though I was supposed to be an Accounts Executive, Catering Manager, Copywriter and or in other job positions. That was when I realised that my calling went beyond the attractive promotions offered to me by my bosses. I felt that I was meant to be a Tai Chi Chi Kung teacher in my late teens and it inspired me to get to know these unknown aspects of me by travelling to meet Tai Chi Chi Kung and Chi Healing teachers and philosophers in China, India, United States of America and in Europe.

Twenty (20) years later, I was able to synthesize the teachings from these 7 different teachers and started the School of Rainbow Tai Chi Chi Kung in Devon, United Kingdom.

Dr Evelyn Ho: Tell us about your experience in being part of the team for healing in the UK? Which hospital or centre were you in?

Peter: From 1987-1992, besides courses in many Adult Education Centres in many different towns, I was also appointed Director of a Holistic Health Centre called, The Creative Being Centre in Stratford-upon-Avon. I participated in supporting many weekly meeting groups such as the Cancer Support Group, Open Door to Healing, Meditation, Shiatsu, Swedish Massage courses. I coordinated also many health conferences such as "The Holistic Tools to Heal and Understand the Diseases of the 1980s' - an Open Forum with Dr Gordon Avery of the South Warwickshire Health Authority, Stratford-upon-Avon Mayor C H Bates, Cancer Healer Stephanie Collins and other therapists to build bridges of understanding between mainstream medical groups and alternative health therapy groups.

Another example was the 'Humor and Healing' workshop which I organised for Dr Patch Adams and other healers to meet each other for exchanging experiences and skills. I also gave lectures and was invited to give demonstrations in many health centres such as the Solihull Natural Health Centre on 'How to Build Consciousness of Health and Joy'.

I was also founder of the first Holistic and Complementary Health Directory of The Midlands in UK for three consecutive years linking up more than 300 different therapy groups together under one umbrella. I was also elected Chairman of The Leamington Spa International Peace Festival Committee that brought together 80 Health and Peace Organisations to set up conferences and information booths and attracted 50,000 visitors and participants. I started also training intensives for Tai Chi Chi Kung teacher trainees in Stratford-upon-Avon.

I moved to Cornwall in 1993 and continued the teacher trainings as well as running weekly and daily classes in adult education teaching Tai Chi Chi Kung as healing tools to help people in 10 towns. I also ran Tao of Health of Health and Rejuvenation courses at The Well Being Centre, Illogan, Cornwall.

I moved to Devon in the South West of England in 1997 to set up my own School of Rainbow Tai Chi Chi Kung and continue running courses in adult education centres in Ashburton, Topsham, Exeter, Totnes, Plymouth and Paignton. I was invited by The Dartington Centre and Schumacher College to hold Tao of Health and Rejuvenation Courses for the public. I was also invited by the Derriford Plymouth Hospital to provide 10 Weekly Classes of Tai Chi Chi Kung healing methods to complement the medical treatments of Cancer Patients at the Macmillan Cancer Ward. In addition, I was invited by the Pain Management group in Paignton to conduct 10 weekly classes for their members.

Dr Evelyn Ho: What do you see the role of Tai Chi and Chi Kung?

Peter: The practice of 8 Basic Tai Chi exercises, 7 Basic Chi Kung Exercises and Zhineng Chi Kung Exercises are based on the Taoist philosophy of balancing Yin and Yang as a way to return to harmony, health and understanding. This is an inclusive Heart Body Mind Spirit system of education and health exercises and study which serves complementary health therapy and mainstream medical groups as well as primary, secondary, college and universities. Up to date, the teacher trainees and I have visited and conducted classes in more than 150 academic institutions in the UK such as The Beatrix Potter Primary School, the Nottingham High School, The Emerson College and the University of London.

Dr Evelyn Ho: Let us talk about Tai Chi Chi Kung in relation to cancer specifically. What are the strengths of practising Tai Chi Chi Kung?

Peter: Tai Chi complements Chi Kung. Chi Kung provides the foundation like a tree's roots while Tai Chi is like the trunk of the tree. They are integrated together. The Tai Chi exercises loosen up the joints, muscles and tendons and allow the practitioner to centre him or herself thus
enabling Chi energising Chi Kung Exercises to channel energy through the meridian path ways to rejuvenate cells in the body.

The study and practice of Tai Chi Chi Kung occurs on all emotional, physical, mental and spiritual levels. For example, in learning how to LET GO the tensions in the joints, simultaneously, the practitioner is encouraged to LET GO also on the emotional level, with regards to specific stressful worrying responsibilities he or she may be holding onto in daily life. The participant is also taught to VISUALISE the role plays being released at the same time as the physical exercises of Letting Go, hence, it is an emotional, physical, mental and spiritual exercise. The result is a TOTAL RELAXATION of heart, body, mind and spirit, and so, when total relaxation happens, chi energy floods the whole person and flushes out all tensions and brings in fresh vitality.

The practice and study of Zhineng Chi Kung is a specific method of healing that focuses on people who are suffering from ill health, including incurable illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, arthritis, deafness, coronary disease and paralysis. I was trained as a Chi Healer at the Zhineng Chi Kung Centre at Huaxia, city of Qinhuangdao, 5 hours by train from Beijing. The founder Dr Pang Ming founded the Centre in February 1992 and was recognized by the government of China as a non profit organisation and a legitimate hospital and clinic.

Dr Evelyn Ho: Why do some "claim" that Tai Chi/Chi Kung can cure cancer?

Peter: Yes, this is not a claim but a fact that Zhineng Chi Kung have shown to cure certain types of cancer, such as bladder cancer. Recorded by independent witnesses and recorded on medical x ray monitors, Zhineng Chi Kung healing practitioners were able to demonstrate within one minute, a two inch cancer tumour “dissolve” by Zhineng Chi being applied to the patient. 10 days later, the patient was re-examined medically and found to be without trace of the tumour.

The practice of Tai Chi is known to cure many illnesses such as Tuberculosis as demonstrated by Professor Cheng Man-Ching who medically contracted the lung disease and was cured by the practice of Tai Chi 5-7 hours per day for two months. A few years ago, an independent control group study by the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield UK, discovered that Tai Chi practice helped their high blood pressure patients improve and return to normal healthy function.
