by Dr.Vanita Paramajothy, Hospital UKM, Kuala Lumpur

With endorsement from the College of Radiology Academy of Medicine of Malaysia and the support of various sponsors, the Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) successfully organised an advanced vascular ultrasound course on the 2nd August 2008. The one day course took place at Hospital UKM with diverse participants ranging from medical officers, trainee radiologists, radiologists and clinicians from both the government and private hospitals in Malaysia.

For the hundred participants at the Vascular Ultrasound Course, it was a weekend well-spent with Dr Victor Chao, a renowned consultant vascular radiologist from National Heart Institute, Singapore . The course kicked off on a Saturday morning with an excellent lecture on Renal Doppler Ultrasound. This was followed by a real-time demonstration of Renal Doppler by Shirley Eng, Chief Medical Technologist (Vascular) in National Heart Center Singapore, Vascular Laboratory.

The second lecture was related to Varicose Vein Doppler Ultrasound by Dr Victor Chao with excellent anatomical and pathological correlation. Lectures were then reinforced, with live demonstrations of Varicose Vein Doppler and IV fistula Doppler Ultrasound. The others involved were Ms Elaine Goh and Ms Ong Seow Wei who are also Medical Technologist ( Vascular) in National Heart Center Singapore.

The finale, also the highlight of the course was the hands-on session on vascular ultrasound, with personal guidance from the speakers, Dr Victor Chao and Tan Sook Pei. Overall, the course was a success with positive feedback from the participants.
