The How, When and Why in Paediatric Ultrasound, Paediatric Institute, Kuala Lumpur – 24 Nov 2007

by Drs Evelyn Ho, Zaleha Abdul Manaf and Tan Sook Pei

L to R: Dr Noreen Nurfaraheen Abdullah, Dr Zaleha Abdul Manaf, Prof Dr Zulfiqar, Mr Roger Gent, Dr Evelyn Ho, Dr Hamzaini and Dr Che Zubaidah

There was an air of anticipation as a group of 61 medical and paramedical professionals including radiologists, paediatricians and radiographers congregated at the Auditorium of the Paediatric Institute in Kuala Lumpur early on a Saturday morning. They were there to attend a workshop focussed on how to perform high quality ultrasound examinations for common organ systems and disease conditions in the paediatric population. There was something for everyone – those acquiring basic practical skills or were there to improve their knowledge and the ability to recognise normal and pathological ultrasound images. Finally, it would not be complete without an update on the advances in paediatric sonography as well as artifacts associated with new ultrasound technology.

The “local” speaker was Dr Zaleha Abdul Manaf, Head of Diagnostic Imaging Department in Hospital Kuala Lumpur and who is also a paediatric radiologist. She spoke on “Urinary Tract Infections”.

The foreign speaker who was an expert in paediatric ultrasound practice was Mr Roger Gent, an Honorary Fellow of the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine as well as Head of the Paediatric Ultrasound Unit in the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide, Australia. In fact, about 30 years ago, Roger set up the paediatric ultrasound unit. He has publications and has been invited as a speaker in scientific meetings. The participants at the workshop were privileged to have him lecture extensively as well as give practical pointers including live demonstrations on topics related to Large Head Investigation, Neonatal Hip, Evaluation of Abdominal Trauma as well as Advances in Paediatric Sonography (including malrotation and intussusception).

Dr Tan Sook Pei, a radiologist at the workshop said, “The workshop is excellent. Mr Gent’s lecture on neonatal hip ultrasound is the best I have heard and he gave pointers that could be easily put into practice. In fact, he made hip ultrasound look easy!”.

Congratulations to Dr Zaleha, chairperson of the organising committee and her team for the smooth running of the workshop. The event’s success was also due to the close collaboration with the Malaysian Society of Radiographers, the College of Radiology, Paediatric Institute (venue host) and Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Hospital Kuala Lumpur. It would not have been possible without the main sponsor, Gideons (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.
